BOCA RATON, Fla. – After enrolling in Florida Atlantic to advance his education, an open tryout in February of 2025 gave Darius Smith the opportunity to build a collegiate football career at the Division I level.
Knowing nothing is promised as a walk-on, Smith worked relentlessly to meet the standard that is expected under Hagerty Family Head Football Coach Zach Kittley and has earned a spot on the travel squad in his second year with the program.
Settling in as a defensive back, he has played in all eight games during the 2026 season, serving a role on the special teams unit.
On "Inside The Owls' Burrow," host Frank Forte follows a day-in-the-life of Smith as a walk-on player, from early morning meetings to a nighttime class.
Inside the Owls' Burrow" the team's weekly show airing each Thursday throughout the season on the Spot. The Spot, South Florida 39 (WSFL-TV), will air the show weekly on Thursdays at 5:30 p.m. ET in the Miami-Ft. Lauderdale DMA with replays running to be determined. The Spot, South Florida 9 (WHDT-TV), will air the show on Thursday at 6 p.m. ET in the West Palm Beach-Fort Pierce DMA with replays to be determined.
