Mary Giardina joined the Florida Atlantic University athletics staff as a senior associate athletic director of compliance and the department's SWA in December of 2018. One year later, Giardina moved into a new role overseeing the administrative side of athletics while continuing her efforts as the SWA. In the fall of 2022, she was named a deputy athletics director. Giardina has oversight of multiple areas including human resources, sports medicine, strength and conditioning and Title IX, while also serving as a member of the executive staff.
Giardina came to FAU from Duke, where she served as Executive Director of Compliance, overseeing the day-to-day operations of the compliance office. Her responsibilities included building a rules education curriculum, assisting coaches with interpreting NCAA rules, monitoring initial and continuing eligibility, and managing the processing of NCAA Level III and ACC violations. Giardina also served as a disciplinary advisor and college advisor.
Prior to her second stint at Duke, Giardina served as the Director of Compliance at the Atlantic Coast Conference. While at the ACC, she piloted a project to improve rules education for ACC members, served as a liaison between institutions and the NCAA, coordinated hearing and maintenance for conference-administered waivers and appeals, and managed the process of NCAA and ACC violations.
Giardina also spent time at Duke as an assistant director of sports information and served as the compliance liaison with an emphasis on monitoring NCAA Bylaw 13. In addition, she coordinated all sports information efforts for several sports. The former Wake Forest varsity track and field athlete got her start in compliance by serving as a compliance assistant at Duke. In that role, she spearheaded the development of a compliance education video for student-athlete certification meetings and also created a monthly compliance newsletter, among other duties.
Giardina has a Bachelor of Science from Wake Forest in exercise science and a Master of Arts in liberal studies from Duke.
