The countdown to Florida Atlantic University's first football season continued Wednesday with the announcement of the team's second recruiting class. Head coach and Director of Football Operations, Howard Schnellenberger, announced 31 scholarship student athletes have been added to the FAU football roster.
"This is a wonderful, wonderful day for Florida Atlantic University," said Schnellenberger. "This is by far the best class we've recruited here. As I look back to the days at Miami and at Louisville, when we went through a similar process in 1979 and 1984, these classes that we've been able to put together here from the Florida Atlantic Territory are vastly superior to the ones we were able to put together at Miami and at Louisville."
The breakdown of players includes six from Palm Beach County, four from Broward County, and seven from Miami-Dade County.
"To be able to put together what I think is going to be a great football team in the shortest period possible, and to be able to do that with South Florida kids, is carrying out the mission of this university and this football team," said Schnellenberger.
In all, only two of the 31 players is from outside of the state of Florida.
Schnellenberger credits the work of his coaching staff in the success the program has made in bringing in some of the area's top talent.
"Our coaching staff has put more hours in on recruiting than any staff that I've been associated with," he said. "That's why they know more about every kid in the Florida Atlantic territory than Miami, Florida, Florida State, South Florida, or anybody else. For that reason we are going to be successful over the years."
"We are fully loaded and fully prepared to start this journey now, said Schnellenberger.
