BOCA RATON, Fla. – Mason Porter-Brown drilled the game-winning 3-pointer from the left wing with one second remaining, giving the Florida Atlantic men's basketball team a 71-70 victory over The Citadel in its exhibition finale Sunday afternoon.
The Owls held the Bulldogs without a field goal for the final seven minutes, setting up the final successful possession for the home team. While Porter-Brown made the play of the day,
Kanaan Carlyle led the way with 24 points and four 3-pointers.
THE BEGINNING
An early hot start from Carlyle saw him knock down his first seven shot attempts on the way to 16 points in the opening 20 minutes. In a first half that saw a lead no larger than six points, the Owls held off the Bulldogs, maintaining a slight 37-35 advantage entering the locker room.
THE TURNING POINT
The Citadel jumped out to a seven-point lead, but the Owls closed the gap highlighted by a soaring slam dunk from Porter-Brown. The eventual hero of the game hit a 3-pointer to tie it at 57 and a Carlyle floater returned the lead to Florida Atlantic with just under nine minutes remaining. The Bulldogs responded to recapture the advantage.
THE FINISH
Right before the final media timeout, Carlyle knocked in his fourth trey of the game, cutting the deficit to 65-64 and complementing a Florida Atlantic defense that forced The Citadel to miss its last 10 shot attempts from the field.
Milhan Charles spun his way inside for a layup to cut it to one, and freshman
Felipe Quinones scored with 50 seconds to go for a 68-67 lead. While the Bulldogs briefly gained the edge back on two free throws, Porter-Brown would not be denied of the successful final shot attempt right before the buzzer.
