CORAL GABLES, Fla.  – Florida Atlantic baseball dropped a third consecutive one-run game on Tuesday, falling by a 5-4 final to Miami. The Owls (24-12) let a late lead slip as the Hurricanes (21-17) captured the season series two games to one.
Â
The Owls got a fast start with hits from the game's first three batters. After a
Marshall Lipsey double and a
John Martinez single,
John Schroeder went to the opposite for a base hit to make it 1-0. Miami tied the game in the second inning, though they did it without a hit. A walk, two stolen bases, and a throwing error allowed a run to score.
Â
The Hurricanes didn't register their first hit until one out into the fifth inning. UM had runners on second and third, but
Reilly Witmer escaped the jam with a strikeout.
Â
Miami took the lead for the first time in the sixth and added another run on a solo homer in the seventh to lead 3-1. The Owls responded with a big eighth inning.
Nick Romano sparked the offense with an infield single.
Brando Leroux laced a double to the left field corner to cut the deficit to 3-2, and Lipsey tripled to tie it. A sacrifice fly by Schroeder restored a 4-3 lead for the visitors.
Â
The FAU lead was short-lived, however. In the bottom of the eighth, a leadoff walk, a double, and a sac fly tied the score at 4-4. Another double followed to bring the go-ahead run in, which would be enough for the Hurricanes. The Owls went down in order in the top of the ninth. Â
Â
- Lipsey's double and triple extended his reached-base streak to 34 games.
- Martinez matched Lipsey's 2-for-4 line with a pair of singles.
- The Owls outhit Miami 8-5.
Â
- Before Miami registered its first hit in the fifth inning, the FAU pitching staff had gone 11 consecutive innings without allowing a knock (Memphis' solo home run in the second inning on Sunday).
- The Owls used nine pitchers, starting with two innings from freshman Joey Abbazia.
- Kide Adetuyi handled a scoreless third inning.
- Dawson Ball recorded the first out of the fourth before turning it over to Witmer for an inning and two-thirds.
- Dylan Oborne made his first appearance of the season after undergoing Tommy John surgery last spring. The redshirt junior faced two batters in his first action since February 28, 2024.
- Max Martzolf followed Oborne and recorded the last two outs of the sixth.
- Ryan Buckler allowed the solo home run in the seventh.
- Zach Kilby (1-2) was charged with the loss after conceding two runs on two hits and a walk in the eighth.
- Carter Holjes recorded the final out of the eighth with a strikeout.
Â
The Owls return to conference play with a special Thursday-Saturday series against Wichita State. First pitch for the series opener at the FAU Baseball Stadium on Thursday is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. Friday's start time is also set for 6:30 p.m., while the Saturday finale will begin at 1 p.m.Â
