BOCA RATON, Fla. – After closing out the regular season with a pair of sweeps over the weekend, the Florida Atlantic University volleyball team had two players recognized by Conference USA. Alex Cardona was named Defensive Player of the Week, while Ivone Martinez earned Setter of the Week.
Cardona continued to bolster the Owls’ back row defense with a pair of solid efforts over the weekend. On Thursday, she had 26 digs and three assists vs. UAB. Cardona added 12 more digs and a service ace against Charlotte on Saturday. The two matches were the 22nd and 23rd double-digit dig matches of the season for the junior. For the weekend, she averaged 6.33 digs per set.
Martinez, the nation’s leader in assists per set, turn in two steady performances as the playmaker in the Owls’ offensive attack. She turned in 35 assists and 12 digs versus UAB on Thursday for her ninth double-double of the season and had 47 assists and eight digs on Saturday against Charlotte. Martinez averaged 13.67 assists and 3.33 digs per set over the weekend.
The Owls will head to Bowling Green, Kentucky, for next weekend’s C-USA Tournament as the No. 5 seed and will play UTSA at 8 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 17. For the most up-to-date information, logon to fausports.com.
