The Florida Atlantic University volleyball team was picked to finish 13th in Conference USA as the league released its preseason poll and all-conference team on Wednesday.
The Owls finished the 2012 season with a 7-19 overall record and a 2-13 conference mark as members of the Sun Belt. In their first season under head coach Fernanda Nelson, FAU more than doubled their win total from the previous year. Four players return from last year's squad and the Owls added 12 new players in this year's recruiting class.
Rice received three first-place votes and tallied 200 points, while three-time defending CUSA regular season champion Tulsa and UTSA tied for second place with 192 points. The Golden Hurricane picked up four first-place votes to two for the Roadrunners. North Texas claimed three first-place votes and scored 175 points for fourth, followed by UTEP, Middle Tennessee, UAB and Marshall rounding out the top half of the poll. MTSU, host of the 2013 C-USA Volleyball Championship, picked up the final two first place votes.
FIU was picked to finish ninth, with Tulane, Southern Miss and Charlotte ahead of FAU. Lousiana Tech and East Carolina rounded out the poll. The Owls open the 2013 season when they host the FAU Invitational on August 30-31.
