BOWLING GREEN, Kent. - The Florida Atlantic University volleyball team lost to UTSA in four sets (25-19, 25-16, 11-25, 25-18) in the quarterfinals of the Conference USA volleyball tournament on Friday night. The Owls end the season with an overall record of 18-9.
The first set was close for much of the early going. The Roadrunners (12-15) led by a single point, 17-16, when they went on an 8-3 run to take the first set. In the second set, UTSA used strong serving to take a 16-5 lead. The Owls never got closer than six points the rest of the way and went into the locker room trailing two sets to none. The momentum appeared to shift after the intermission, as FAU stormed out to a sizable early lead and never looked back, eventually winning the third frame 25-11. Set number four was a tug-of-war throughout until a 6-1 UTSA ended the match and the Owls’ season.
- Sydney Nemtuda led the Owls with 17 kills.
- Sigourney Kame added 12 kills.
- Ivone Martinez registered 43 assists, ending the season with 1,153, the third best single season total in program history.
- Alex Cardona posted a match high 18 digs, with Kori Varney notching 15. Cardona’s 424 digs on the year is the fourth most in a season in FAU history.
The Owls are expected to return four regular starters for the 2018 season.
