BOCA RATON, FL - The Florida Atlantic University volleyball team lost to Southern Miss in four sets (15-25, 27-25, 25-20, 25-23) on Sunday. Senior Darija Sataric was recognized prior to start of the match.
The Owls (13-16, 5-10 C-USA) took a lead early in the first set, but USM (16-13, 7-7) rallied to within two at 13-11. FAU closed on a 12-4 run to win the set. Liene Mellupe had five kills and two service aces in the frame.
FAU trailed 14-8 in the second set, but the Owls battled their way back to tie the score at 18. There were five more ties in the set, the final one coming at 25. Back-to-back USM kills tied the match at a set each.
USM used a big early run to take the third set 25-20. The Owls and Eagles were locked in a battle in the fourth set. The score was tied at 17 when FAU gave up four straight points to fall behind 21-17. The Owls were unable to catch up and lost the set 25-23.
FAU will continue its season at the Conference USA Tournament, hosted by Middle Tennessee. The tournament begins on Thursday, Nov. 24. The Owls will play no. 5 seed North Texas in a first round match that is scheduled to start at 3 p.m. eastern. Live video of the match will be available through the C-USA Digital Network.
