BOCA RATON, FL - The Florida Atlantic University volleyball team captured a 3-2 victory over North Texas on Friday in five sets (25-19, 15-25, 25-21, 17-25, 15-11). The team also clinched a spot in the 2013 Conference USA Championship Tournament. There were only three lead changes the entire night. FAU has now won three straight five set matches.
Three Owls notched double-digit kills as Brianne Wojciakowski, Katarina Stepanovic and Kristi Tekavec notched 13, 12 and 11 kills respectively. Jelena Jovanovic had her ninth double-double of the year with 51 assists and 14 digs on the night. FAU jumped out to a 3-0 lead early in the first set to gain momentum before piecing together a 10-3 run to take the set 25-19.
North Texas scored seven straight points in the second set to even the match before the Owls earned four service aces in set three to retake a 2-1 lead. After winning the fourth set, the Green Wave scored the first point of the fifth. That would be its only lead in the final frame as the Owls went on a 6-1 run to take a lead they would not relinquish.
The victory, combined with an ECU loss to UTSA puts FAU in the postseason for the first time since 2006. The Owls (13-15, 4-9 C-USA) hosts Southern Miss on Sunday before it goes to the Conference USA Tournament in Murfreesboro, Tenn. Nov. 21-23. Sunday is also Senior Night and Darija Sataric will be honored before the match. The match begins at noon and live stats and live video will be available at www.fausports.com.
