BOCA RATON, FL - A Jennifer St. Sume kill capped a tremendous comeback as the Florida Atlantic volleyball team rallied to defeat FIU in five sets (25-18, 14-25, 25-22, 15-25, 15-13) on Tuesday night.
The Owls (12-15) had to dig themselves out of an early hole in the first set as they trailed 7-4. However, they used their first rally of the evening to pull ahead of the Panthers (11-16) by a score of 14-9. FIU never got closer than three points the rest of the way in a 25-18 Owls victory.
FIU got off to another fast start in the second set and was able to maintain the momentum this time, winning 25-14. Set number three was competitive from the very beginning, with neither side able to shake free of the other. A Darija Sataric kill tied the score at 22 late in the set. FAU then took the next three points, capped by an Alessia Pizzoccheri service ace to take the frame 25-22.
The fourth set was a replay of the second, with the Panthers gaining early control and winning 25-15 to force a decisive fifth set. In that fifth set, it seemed FIU would cruise to an easy victory, as the Panthers stormed out to a 10-2 advantage. It was at that point that Erika Brown made her presence felt. The freshman teamed with Katarina Stepanovic on a block and then served the Owls to within two points of the Panthers at 10-8.
After an FIU kill, Liene Mellupe had a service ace, followed by back-to-back kills by Pizzoccheri to put the Owls up 12-11. FIU tied the score at 12, but FAU took three of the next four points to win the match, with St. Sume providing the finishing stroke.
