MURFREESBORO, TN - Brianne Wojciakowski had double-digit kills for the second match in a row, but it was not enough to overtake Middle Tennessee, as the Florida Atlantic University volleyball team lost to the Blue Raiders in four sets (22-25, 25-19, 25-22, 26-24) on Sunday.
The Owls (11-15, 3-9 C-USA) held a slim lead for the early portion of the first set, but the Blue Raiders (17-10, 8-4) rallied to tie the score at 16. FAU answered with a 6-1 run of its own to take a 22-17 lead. MT cut the lead to two, but Wojciakowski's sixth kill of the frame gave the Owls a 25-22 win.
Strong serving put the Blue Raiders up 5-0 to start the second set. FAU fought back to tie the score at 12, and then again at 15. However, MT went on a 7-2 run on the way to a 25-19 victory.
Set number three was a tug of war with the two sides trading points. The score was tied at 17 when MT went on a 5-1 run. The Owls made a charge and were within two at 24-22, but a Blue Raider kill ended any hopes of a rally.
The fourth set began in a similar fashion to the third, with neither squad able to maintain control. With the score tied at 12, FAU won three points in a row to take a 15-12 lead. The Blue Raiders used a 6-0 run to take an 18-15 lead. The stubborn Owls would not go away and had a set point at 24-23. However, MT scored three straight points to clinch the match 26-24.
Despite the loss, FAU is still alive for a berth in the Conference USA tournament and will end the regular season with a three match homestand. The homestand begins on Tuesday with a match against rival FIU. Live video and live stats of the match will be available at fausports.com.
