BOCA RATON, FL - Sophomore Alessia Pizzoccheri had 21 kills and was one of four Owls to record at least 10 in the Florida Atlantic volleyball team's five set win (25-22, 21-25, 25-19, 23-25, 15-7) on Friday night.
The 10th and final tie of the first set came at 18-18 before the Owls (7-18, 2-12 Sun Belt) reeled off four straight points to take a 22-18 lead. South Alabama (13-16, 6-8) cut the lead to one at 23-22, but a Sara Stoll kill and a USA attack error gave the Owls a 25-22 set one victory.
FAU led 10-5 in the second set, but USA refused to go away, rallying to tie the score at 12. The two teams exchanged the next several points. The score was tied at 14 when the Jaguars took the four points for an 18-14 advantage. The Owls cut the lead to two on a couple of occasions down the stretch, but could never catch all the way up, with USA tying the match at a set each.
Set number three began with FAU thundering out to a 7-1 lead. USA never got within four points of the lead for the remainder of the set and FAU took a two sets to one lead. Thacilli Pereira had four kills in the set.
USA got out to the fast start in set number four, taking an early 7-3 edge. The Owls rallied to take a 17-16 lead, but the Jaguars answered and eventually took the set 25-23, forcing a fifth set.
In that fifth set, the score was tied at 4-4, before FAU, helped by two kills each from Pereira and Pizzoccheri took a 13-6 lead that was too much for USA to overcome.
The Owls will wrap up the regular season on Saturday when they host Troy. The match starts at 6:30 p.m.
