Florida Atlantic University saw its longest winning streak of the season come to an end Tuesday night as the University of Miami defeated the Owls 30-22, 30-28, 30-21 at FAU Gym. The Hurricanes were able to minimize errors to improve to 19-3. FAU falls to 13-13 with three matches remaining.
Florida Atlantic tallied as many kills in the match as the Hurricanes but the Owls committed ten more errors than their opponents to create the differential. Miami also used aggressive blocking as they out-blocked FAU 11-6.
The Hurricanes were held in check in game one through the first twelve points as FAU tied it at 6. The home team would bring the score to within three at 14-11 before Miami went on a 16-11 run to close out the game.
The Owls had their best chance to win a game in the second when they took a 28-26 lead. A Valeria Tipiana kill and a block by Tipiana and Robin Lewullis tied the game at 28. The Hurricanes closed out the game with a 4-0 run after an FAU hitting error and Lewullis connected on one of her six kills on the night.
In the third game, FAU again took an early lead to see it diminish. Four serving errors by the Owls and 10 kills by UM's Marcela Gamarra gave the Hurricanes their largest margin of victory of the night.
Gamarra led Miami with 19 kills and only one error. The senior finished with a .486 hitting percentage to lead the Hurricanes. UM's libero, Jamie Grass led the team defensively as she picked up 21 digs.
Both setters, FAU's Jeana Boyle and UM's Mallorey James, completed the night with 39 assists.
Florida Atlantic will complete conference play on Friday when they host Jacksonville University at 7 pm in Boca Raton.
