GREENVILLE, NC - Freshman Kristi Tekavec had a career-high 19 kills as the Florida Atlantic University volleyball team snapped its seven match losing streak with a five set win (17-25, 25-21, 20-25, 25-21, 15-10) over East Carolina on Monday night. The match was originally scheduled for Sunday afternoon before travel issues for the Owls forced the match to be postponed.
ECU (11-15, 2-7 C-USA) won the first set 25-17, committing just one attack error in the frame. The Owls (10-13, 2-7 C-USA) tied the match with a 25-21 win in set number two, behind five Tekavec kills. FAU held an 11-4 advantage early in the third set, but the Pirates closed on a 21-9 run to take a two sets to one lead.
In the fourth set, the Owls once again had a lead, this time 12-8. For the second set in a row, ECU fought back to tie the score at 13. There were five more ties in the frame, the final one coming at 20-20. From that point, FAU outscored the Pirates 5-1 to tie the match at two sets each.
Set number five was a tug-of-war for much of the early going with neither side able to seize firm control of the momentum. With the score tied at nine, ECU committed three errors down the stretch and Kristi Tekavec and Ivana Bulajic each had a kill to give the Owls four match points. After ECU blocked her on the first match point, Bulajic put down a kill to complete the comeback for FAU.
Alessia Pizzoccheri (13 kills, 14 digs) and Alexandra Harvard (41 assists, 10 digs) both had double-doubles on the night. The win not only snapped a losing streak for the Owls but gives them the tiebreaker over the Pirates for the final spot in the upcoming Conference USA tournament.
