MIAMI , Fla. - (Oct. 27, 2017) – The Florida Atlantic University volleyball team avenged a loss from earlier this season, sweeping rival FIU on Friday night. With the win, the Owls improve to 14-7 overall and 5-4 in Conference USA play. The win is the third in a row for FAU and puts this above .500 in conference action for the first time this season.
The Owls led 15-11 in the first set when FIU (3-14, 2-8) rallied to tie the score at 15. There were five more ties in the frame before the Panthers scored three in a row to take a 23-20 edge. FAU had to fight off three set points and squandered two of its own before kills by Sigourney Kame and Sydney Nemtuda ended the set. The second stanza was tight most of the way before the Panthers staked themselves to another cushion late in the set, requiring the Owls to once again claw their way back. With the score tied, Gabrielle Dixon put down a kill and teamed with Nemtuda on a block to give FAU a 2-0 lead. In set number three, FIU had another late lead, but was unable to preserve it as the Owls recovered late for the third time in the match, completing the sweep and earning a measure of revenge from earlier this season.
- Ivone Martinez passed Jelena Jovanovic for sixth place in FAU history in career assists.
- Sigourney Kame, Abbi Reid and Sydney Nemtuda all recorded double-digit kills for FAU.
- The victory guarantees the Owls a winning season for the fourth year in a row.
- The win gives FAU its second longest winning streak of the season.
The Owls return home to host Marshall at noon on Sunday, Oct. 29. Live stats and live video will be available at fausports.com.
