MIAMI, Fla. - The Florida Atlantic University volleyball team struggled offensively in a straight set loss (25-16, 25-21, 25-15) to FIU on Friday night. The Owls were outhit .250-.065 on the night.
Play was sloppy for both teams early in the first set. The Panthers (9-11, 3-4 C-USA) found their rhythm first, but FAU (10-11, 1-6 C-USA) eventually settled its nerves and managed to draw close at 16-15. FIU ended any hopes of an Owls' comeback with a 9-1 run to win the set 25-16. FAU committed eight attack errors in the frame.
Set number two began in similar fashion, with FAU struggling to consistently stay in system against the Panthers. Alexandra Harvard entered late in the set for the Owls and immediately sparked a rally that tied the score at 18. FIU responded by taking a 22-19 lead, on its way to a 25-21 second set win.
Kristi Tekavec tied the score at five early in the third set, but after back-to-back Panther points, the Owls were unable to keep up, eventually falling 25-15. Alessia Pizzoccheri had nine kills and 14 digs to lead FAU in both categories.
The Owls will take some time off before returning to the court to face Tulane and East Carolina on Oct. 25 and 27, respectively.
