BOCA RATON, Fla. - The Florida Atlantic University volleyball team stayed close, but lost to UAB in straight sets (28-26, 25-21, 25-19) on Sunday.
The Blazers (14-8, 3-3 C-USA) led 21-16 late in the first set, but FAU (9-11, 1-5) rallied to tie the score and staved off four match points before eventually falling 28-26, despite four kills each from Jennifer St. Sume and Katarina Stepanovic.
Set number two was close from the very beginning, featuring several long rallies with neither team able to seize control in the early going. The score was tied at 16 when UAB reeled off three straight points to take a 19-16 lead. The Owls cut the advantage to one, but couldn't get any closer, dropping the set 25-21.
After the intermission, UAB came out hot to begin the third set and took the match with a 25-19 victory. The difference in the match came at the net, as the Owls were outblocked 13-0. Alessia Pizzoccheri (11 kills, 14 digs) and Jelena Jovanovic (41 assists, 13 digs) both recorded double-doubles for the Owls.
FAU will travel south to face rival FIU on Friday, Oct. 18 at 6 p.m.
