MURFREESBORO, TN - Alessia Pizzoccheri had 15 kills on Friday night, but it was not enough as the Florida Atlantic University volleyball team lost to Middle Tennessee in four sets (25-21, 25-19, 17-25, 22-25).
Pizzoccheri hit .300 (15-6-30) on the night. Thacilli Pereira was the only other Owl in double-digit kills with 10. Darija Sataric added nine kills and Sara Stoll had six kills. Jelena Jovanovic had 42 assists.
The Owls (6-12, 1-6) lost five of the first six points in the first set and spent most of the set trying to work their way of that hole. FAU was never able to make up the deficit and ultimately lost the set 25-21.
Set number two began the same manner as the first, and once again FAU could not close the margin, losing the set 25-19. In the third set, it was the Owls' turn to get out to the fast start as they started out on an 8-2 run. Middle Tennessee (6-17, 3-4) managed to trim the lead to one at 13-12, prompting an FAU timeout. After the teams returned to the court, the Owls won the next six points to re-establish control. A Sataric kill closed the door and cut FAU's deficit in half.
The fourth set was back and forth the entire way, with 16 ties and seven lead changes. After a Pereira kill tied the score at 22-22, the Owls committed three straight errors that ended the match. The Owls will travel to Bowling Green on Saturday to play #20 Western Kentucky. Match time is set for 5 p.m. and live stats will be available at www.wkusports.com.
