BOCA RATON, Fla. - The Florida Atlantic University volleyball team faced a pesky Charlotte team on Sunday, and ultimately won the match in four sets (25-21, 25-16, 18-25, 25-21).
The first set went back and forth, with five ties and a pair of lead changes, but the Owls (8-6, 1-1 Conference USA) put together a crucial 10-2 run in the late stages to rally and win the set. Three of Alessia Pizzoccheri's seven first set kills came during that time. As a team, FAU hit .343 in the set.
FAU lost the first point of set number two, but never trailed again in the frame. However, the 49ers (10-7, 1-1) did not go away easily, trimming the lead to one after trailing by as many as four points. Pizzoccheri helped put the set away, serving the Owls to eight straight points, including four aces.
Charlotte returned to the court after the intermission with a renewed energy, outhitting the Owls .333 to .103 en route to a 25-18 third set win. That momentum seemed to carry over early in the fourth set, as the 49ers had a 7-3 lead. FAU fought back to eventually tie the score at 9-9. The two teams stayed within two points of each other until late in the set. With the Owls up 22-21, Ivana Bulajic recorded her 14th kill of the day. The 49ers committed back-to-back attack errors to end the match.
FAU surpassed last season's win total with the victory. The Owls wrap up their four match homestand on Tuesday, Oct. 1, when they host Stetson. The match starts at 6 p.m. Live video and live stats will be available at fausports.com.
