Florida Atlantic University used five games to defeat Florida International University 3-2 Wednesday night at FAU. The win was the first since 2002 over the Golden Panthers (1-11). With the win, FAU is off to its best start since 1988.
After winning the first two games, the Owls (10-2) dropped games three and four to take the match to the deciding game. A service error by FIU's Ruth Fleming at 3-3 gave FAU the momentum and cruised out to a 13-8 lead. The Golden Panthers climbed back to 14-12 but an FIU attacking error sealed FAU's win.
FAU went with power again as Iana Andonova, Kelly Paiva and Caye Kaveny led the team with 19, 16 and 13 kills, respectively. Libero Makra Condill led the team with 15 digs followed by Lindsey Bell's 14. Bell add three service aces to lead the team.
FIU's Anna Dmowska finished with a match-high 22 kills in 43 attempts.
FAU opens Atlantic Sun Conference play on Saturday when it hosts Troy University at 7 pm.
