BOCA RATON, Fla. - For the second match in a row, the Florida Atlantic University volleyball team was able to force a decisive fifth set. Unlike the previous match, the Owls' rally came up short as they lost to Marshall in five sets (25-17, 19-25, 25-21, 23-25, 15-13) on Friday night.
FAU (7-6, 0-1 Conference USA) was able to send the match to a fifth set by winning set number four 25-23. In that set, Katarina Stepanovic and Kristi Tekavec had five kills each without committing an attack error.
The Owls got off to a rocky start in the first set, as they had seven attack errors and three service errors. That allowed the Thundering Herd (7-9, 1-0) to take a 25-17 victory. FAU then found their rhythm, maintaining a healthy lead throughout the second set. FAU outhit the Thundering Herd .378 to .222 in the set, led by Stepanovic's perfect 1.000 hitting percentage (5-0-5). Set number three was hotly contested, with eight ties and five lead changes. The final tie came at 19-19, before Marshall won four points in a row, on the way to a 25-21 win.
In the fifth set, FAU led by four points on a couple of occasions, but the Thundering Herd rallied to tie, ultimately winning the set and the match, 15-13.
Stepanovic had a career high 16 kills, while Alessia Pizzoccheri recorded her fifth double-double of the season with 15 kills and 16 digs.
The Owls continue conference play on Sunday, Sept. 29, when they host Charlotte. The match starts at noon. Live video and live stats will be available at fausports.com.
