BOCA RATON, FL - Chandler Hatton and Thacilli Pereira each had a match-high eight kills in the Florida Atlantic volleyball team's straight set (25-11, 25-10, 25-16) victory over Bethune-Cookman on Tuesday night. The victory surpassed last season's win total and was a total team effort as seven different Owls recorded more than two kills.
The first set was tied at 3-3 when Gabriella Pyle served the Owls (4-8) to an 11-3 lead. Bethune-Cookman (0-17) never challenged the rest of the way and FAU won the set by a comfortable margin. FAU's offense was the story in the second set, as the Owls hit .647 (12-1-17) in the game. A 6-0 run early in the set, bookended by a late 5-0 provided most of the advantage in the Owls' 25-10 win.
Set number three started out closer than the first two, as the Wildcats were able to stay within striking distance most of the set. FAU held a slim 7-6 lead, when Hatton and Pereira combined for three kills as part of a 7-1 Owl run that widen the gap between the two teams. The score was 21-14 when the duo struck again, providing three more kills to help close out the match.
The Owls resume Sun Belt conference play this weekend when they travel to South Alabama and Troy. South Alabama is up first, with Friday's match set for an 8 p.m. eastern.
