DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - Playing its second five-set match in less than 48 hours, the Florida Atlantic University volleyball team defeated Bethune-Cookman (25-23, 22-25, 25-23, 26-28, 15-8) on Sunday. The match was the final non-conference match of the regular season for the Owls, who improved to 9-4. BCU fell to 2-6.
The first set followed a routine of the Owls building a modest lead, followed by the Wildcats responding to claw back into striking distance. FAU led 24-21 late in the frame, but couldn’t convert its first two set point opportunities before Abbi Reid put away a kill to give the Owls a 1-0 lead. In set number two, the Owls led 19-17 and were on the verge of taking the first two sets, when BCU closed on an 8-3 run to tie the match headed to intermission. After the break, strong serving by Alex Cardona and Ivone Martinez put the Owls up 15-11. BCU rallied to tie the score at 19, but two kills each down the stretch by Reid and Cailea Gibbs helped the Owls win the stanza 25-23 and take a 2-1 edge. The Wildcats started the fourth set strong, and led 19-10 late. However, FAU refused to go quietly and eventually tied the score at 23 apiece. The Owls had a chance to end the match, but BCU put down a kill to extend the frame. BCU came up empty on two set points, but capitalized on the third, winning the set 28-26 and forcing a fifth set. After a BCU kill pulled the Wildcats to within a point at 5-4 in the fifth, FAU went on a 10-3 run, capped off by a Sigourney Kame kill to take the match.
