NEW ORLEANS, LA - The Florida Atlantic University volleyball team defeated the University of New Orleans in five games (31-20, 30-24, 22-30, 25-30, 15-9) Friday night.
The Owls (4-7, 1-0 Sun Belt) were led by Krystena Castro who had 18 kills while Katie Arvidson totaled 11 in the match. Casey LaRocca paced the Owls offense with 40 assists while Kendall Utz led four FAU players in double-digit digs totaling 16.
The Owls were outhit .163 to .159 in game one, but still found themselves with a 21-14 lead before UNO rallied to tie the game at 27. FAU pushed the lead to two at 29-27 before two points in a row by the Privateers knotted the match at 29 apiece. FAU closed out the game on a service error by Lauren Loeffelholz and a block by Casey LaRocca and Morgan Johns to take the 31-29 victory.
In the second game, the Owls jumped out to a 20-12 lead before the Privateers rallied with a 10-1 run to take their first lead at 22-21. FAU finished with a run of their own, closing out the game with a 9-3 run capped off by a Morgan Johns kill for the 30-25 game two win.
The Privateers managed to turn the tide in the third game, going on a 8-0 run that turned a 14-12 game into a 22-12 advantage as the Privateers went on to take game three 30-22. UNO was able to sustain its game three momentum as it leapt out to a 10-3 game four lead. The Owls trimmed the lead to one at 22-21, but couldn't overtake UNO and fell 30-25.
A Morgan Johns serving run was the difference in the fifth and final game as the freshman had three service aces and Krystena Castro had three kills during the run that took FAU from a 5-4 deficit to a 10-5 lead. The Owls were able to hold on for the 15-9 win.
The Owls continue their Sun Belt schedule on Saturday when they take on Louisiana-Lafayette at 4 p.m. Eastern.
