Florida Atlantic University (4-7) defeated Stetson University (1-5) in the first match of the day at the Marriott Boca Bash before falling to Georgia Southern University (5-5) in FAU's third five-game match in a week. Lindsey Bell, Jeana Boyle and Abby Miner all picked up double-doubles.
In a non-conference match against Atlantic Sun member Stetson, Florida Atlantic University picked up a quick 3-0 victory at the Marriott Boca Bash. The Owls finally found their offense after struggling for the last two weeks. The squad had three players, Lindsey Bell, Jessica Kahn and Abby Miner collect double-digit kills. Bell collected her first double-double of her career as she added 11 digs.
DeeAnn Dempsey led the Hatters with 12 kills, while Lindsey Combes picked up 10 digs.
In the nightcap, GSU's setter Susan Winkelman took control of game-one as she had 11 service points to give the Eagles the early momentum. Winkelman picked up both of her aces during that run.
FAU made two runs in the second game. Freshman defensive specialist, Lauren McHugh gave FAU a five-point run. The Owls were behind 18-15, but McHugh gave the team a 20-18 lead with two aces. Florida Atlantic went on another run with the score tied at 21. Miner had a run of six service points behind three kills from Iana Andonova.
FAU went up three games to two before a .152 hitting average in game-four moved the match into the fifth game. Georgia Southern took the early lead behind a kill from Martina Veiglova. Veiglova finished the match with a match-high 28 kills. GSU led throughout the whole match. FAU came with one at 14-13 but a service error by the Owls gave the Eagles their second victory of the day.
Florida Atlantic continues play in the tournament on Saturday as they take on Bethune-Cookman at 12:30 and Xavier University at 7:00 pm. Bethune-Cookman lost both of its matches on Friday as they fell to Stetson and Xavier. Before their victory against B-CC, Georgia Southern defeated Xavier.
