BOCA RATON, FL - Sophomore Alessia Pizzocheri had career highs in kills (18) and digs (21) in the Florida Atlantic University volleyball team's five-set victory (20-25, 25-20, 25-23, 24-26, 15-3) over Stetson on Tuesday night.
The match was a rematch of the Owls' five-set over the Hatters at the Stetson Classic earlier this season. FAU (2-3) held a 13-10 in the first set when the Hatters (3-10) went on a 7-1 run to take a 17-14 lead. The Owls cut the lead to as little as one at 20-19, but could never catch up, ultimately falling 25-20.
Stetson was able to maintain its momentum in the early going of set number two, taking the first four points of the set. After Head Coach Fernanda Nelson called a timeout, FAU rebounded and outscored the Hatters 11-3, thanks in large part to a Alessia Pizzocheri scoring run to seize control of the set. The lead grew as large as six points, and the Owls took the set 25-20 to tie the match.
The third set was a classic battle of wills. It started in a fashion similar to set one as both teams battled for control. The score with tied at 18 when three Stetson attack errors, a Thacilli Pereira service ace and a Chandler Hatton kill put FAU ahead 23-18 with another Hatter attack eventually giving the Owls the 25-23 win.
FAU held a 24-21 lead late in fourth set and seemed well on their way to the win, but Stetson was able to stave off three straight match points as part of a 6-0 run to take the set 26-24 and force a fifth and final set. The Hatters took the first two points of the fifth set, but the Owls were able to regain their composure and behind the strong serving of Pizzocheri and Cintia Nightingale, gave up only one point the rest of the way to take the set and match 15-3.
The Owls will travel to Tempe, AZ for the ASU Sheraton Invitational, hosted by Arizona State. Action begins on Friday when the Owls play Gonzaga and UC-Riverside at 12:30 p.m. and 5:30 p.m. eastern, respectively. Live stats of all matches will be available via GameTracker at www.fausports.com.
