ORLANDO, FL - The Florida Atlantic University volleyball team lost both of its matches on the first day of the Courtyard by Marriott/UCF Classic on Friday.
The Owls (6-4) lost their first match of the day, losing to host UCF in straight sets. A 15-5 UCF run keyed a 25-15 set one win, despite four kills by Christina Wallinger. Set number two was tied at eight before the Knights pulled away for a 25-16 win. The third set was a back and forth battle that featured six ties and two lead changes. FAU fought off two match points, eventually falling 25-23.
FAU's first set versus Jacksonville was also a tightly contested affair, with seven ties and five lead changes. However, Jacksonville was able to close out the set 25-23. The Dolphins took a 13-3 lead in the second set, FAU was able to pull within three points at 23-20, but back-to-back kills gave JU a 2-0 lead. Another fast start put the Owls behind 8-2 in the third set. FAU was unable to catch up, losing the third set, 25-14. Kristyna Dzmuranova had 22 total kills on the day to lead the Owls.
The Owls will wrap up action at the Courtyard by Marriott/UCF Classic on Saturday, when they Baylor at 11:30 a.m.
