JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - The Florida Atlantic University volleyball team won both of its matches at the JU Invitational, hosted by Jacksonville University, on Friday. The Owls (4-1) swept Mississippi Valley State (25-16, 25-19, 25-20) in their first match of the day. Set one was tied at 6-6 in the early going when Katarina Stepanovic's serving helped kickstart an 8-1 FAU run that led to a 25-16 victory for the Owls.
Stepanovic's serving was also the catalyst for an FAU run in the second set, this one pushing the Owls' lead from three points to seven points in the 25-19 win. FAU had a much tougher time in the third set, with the Delta Devils staying close through the early going. The set was tied at 10 before FAU pulled out to an 18-11 advantage. MVSU cut the deficit to as little as three at 22-19, but wouldn't get any closer and the Owls won the set 25-20. Jennifer St. Sume had 10 kills to lead all players and the Owls outhit MVSU .330-.125 in the match.
FAU rallied from a two sets to one deficit to outlast North Florida in five sets (25-21, 22-25, 22-25, 25-21, 15-12) in its second match of the day. Alessia Pizzoccheri served the Owls out to a five point lead in the first set and FAU never surrendered the advantage. Set number two was tied at four, but the Ospreys took seven of the next nine points on their way to a 25-22 win. UNF used two separate scoring runs in the third set to take the lead on their way to another 25-22 victory. The Ospreys and Owls were tied at 14 in the fourth set, FAU took the next two points and were able to hold off UNF and tie the match with a 25-20 triumph.
Pizzoccheri once again served the Owls out to an early lead in the fifth set and while UNF was able to cut the margin to a single point on three separate occasions, FAU ultimately emerged victorious 15-12. Pizzoccheri had a career high 23 kills and added 19 digs, while Jelena Jovanovic had 53 assists and 25 digs in the match.
