FORT MYERS, Fla. – The Florida Atlantic University volleyball team defeated Florida Gulf Coast in a demanding four-set (25-19, 31-29, 17-25, 32-30) affair on Saturday. The match was FAU’s final tilt at the FGCU Homewood Suites Classic. The Owls are now 4-2 on the season.
FAU used strong serving to take the first set 25-19. The Owls trailed 24-20 in the second set and staved off five set points before winning the frame 31-29 to take a 2-0 lead. FGCU’s serving helped them create separation and the Eagles won set number three 25-17 to cut FAU’s lead in half. The Eagles had doubled up the Owls, 12-6, early in the fourth set, but FAU battled their way back to even the score at 17. FGCU won the next three points, the Owls once again responded and leveled the score at 21. There were six more ties in the frame, the final one coming at 30. At that point, Sigourney Kame took over. The sophomore notched her career-best 24th kill, followed by a solo block to end the match.
- Kame recorded a .309 hitting percentage in her career best 24 kill performance.
- Kristi Tekavec maintained her streak of double-doubles with 20 kills and 10 digs.It was her fourth double-double in a row. Tekavec was named to the all-tournament team.
- Abbi Reid had 10 kills.
- Ivone Martinez continued her outstanding junior season with a career-high 61 assists for first double-double of the season.
- Alex Cardona led the Owls with 18 kills.

The Owls head to Tampa for next weekend’s USF Invitational. FAU will face Oral Roberts at 3:30 p.m. on Friday, September 8 in its first match of the weekend.
