In the first day of action at the FAU Radisson Classic, Florida Atlantic University started the season 2-0 after defeating Youngstown State 3-1 and North Carolina State 3-0. The two wins gave head coach Jody Brown his 100th career victory.
The first match posted the Owls against the Penguins but FAU pulled out a tight victory behind the outside hitting of junior transfer Abby Miner (Largo, FL). Miner posted 9 kills in the fourth game to give her a match-leading 23 kills and a .319 hitting percentage to open her career at FAU. Jeana Boyle tallied 48 assists.
Annie Buschur lead YSU with 10 kills and Beth Boscarelli added nine digs.
In the nightcap FAU again used the power of their outside hitters to muscle past the Wolfpack for its first victory over NC State. Miner and senior Danyielle Smith both posted double-digit kills. Freshman Makra Condill was a presence in the back row as she led the team in digs in both matches with 15 and 11.
FAU will continue play in the tournament on Saturday against Wright State at 12 pm and will play Minnesota at 7 pm. Minnesota received votes in the AVCA preseason poll. The Golden Gophers escaped with two victories on the day after a five-game match with Wright State.
