Miami Native Has Coached Volleyball at All Levels
Florida Atlantic University Head Volleyball Coach Fernanda Nelson named Charlie Castillo assistant volleyball coach in July 2012.
"We are extremely excited to have Charlie Castillo join our FAU family. He is a driven, passionate and determined young coach who will help us build a very successful program," said Nelson.
The Owls more than doubled their win total from the previous year, while in the process snapping a conference losing streak that had lasted almost two years. The team also earned a victory over a Big East opponent (Villanova) at the Arizona State University Sheraton Invitational.
After graduating from Miami-Sunset High School, Castillo played on the club volleyball team at FIU while earning his bachelor's degree in Psychology. Castillo began his coaching career while at FIU, coaching at the Volleyball Players Academy. After three years at VPA, Castillo moved on to become an assistant coach at Fort Myers High School where, along with head coach Stephanie Martin, he helped to the Green Wave to back-to-back appearances in the 4A state championship game. Castillo also assisted with volleyball summer camps at Florida Gulf Coast University, where Nelson was an assistant.
In addition to his duties at FMHS, Castillo also served as head coach for the USA Volleyball South Region under-18 team, leading the squad to the USAV Junior Olympics in 2010.
