Boca Raton, Fla. - For the second straight week and third time this year, senior wide receiver Lester Jean has been recognized as Florida Atlantic University’s Male Student-Athlete of the Week. Freshman women’s tennis player Marlene Ryan received the female award from the athletic department.
Jean joins women’s swimmer Eszter Bucz as the only Owls’ athletes to be a three-time award honoree this school year. He also received the award last week, after the football team’s victory over FIU, and for his performance in the season-opening victory at UAB on September 2.
Last Saturday at Western Kentucky, Jean had three catches for 79 yards, including a 62-yard touchdown pass in a 17-16 Sun Belt Conference victory. The senior from Miami made a sensational catch down the sideline in a pass by quarterback Jeff Van Camp that gave FAU the lead for the first time in the game. Jean continues to lead the conference and is ranked nationally in receiving yards per game (88.1) and receptions (45). He is averaging 15.7 yards per reception this season.
Meanwhile, Ryan won all three singles matches in last weekend’s UCF tournament. The Delray Beach, Fla. native opened the tournament with a three-set victory over a Virginia Tech opponent. She then picked up straight-set victories over UCF and Stetson opponents.
Other nominees for this week’s Student-Athlete of the Week honors were football players Marcus Bartels and Mickey Groody, men’s basketball player Kore White, swimmer Adam Corbin and diver Maegan Butler.
There will be eight sporting events on the FAU campus this week. The men’s and women’s basketball teams will conclude the exhibition season on Monday with a double header against cross-town rival Lynn University, beginning at 5 p.m., at the FAU Arena, 777 Glades Road on the Boca Raton campus. The men’s basketball team opens the season on Friday at the Athlete in Action Classic in Portland, Ore. FAU will play UC-Davis, Milwaukee and Portland during the three-day event.
