Oct. 17, 2012

Boca Raton, FL - Members of the Florida Atlantic University women’s soccer team will begin the 2012-13 season by playing in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association’s Southeast Regional at USF in Tampa, beginning on Thursday, October 18. Matches will conclude on Monday, October 22.

The Owls return four experienced players who saw significant action in singles and doubles on last year’s team that advanced to the quarterfinals of the Sun Belt Conference championships.

“We have been playing matches in practice, but we really need tournament play to feel that pressure,” said Head Coach Marcy Hora-Cava, who begins her fifth season in leading the program. “This is a great opportunity for the ladies that qualify for the singles draw. There will be some great competition. I’m looking forward to seeing how the players stack up at this stage of the season.”

Senior Marlene Ryan is coming off a spectacular 2011-12 season, posting a 10-2 singles record. The Delray Beach native helped the Owls defeat Arkansas State University 4-0 in the first round of the SBC tournament.

Other experienced three-year letter winners include Natasha Basma, a senior who seven singles matches, including four at the No. 3 singles position; and Natasha Phillips, another senior who had seven doubles victories a year ago, including a 6-4 mark with sophomore Catalina Ene.

Ene had a team-high 11 singles wins in 2012 during her freshman campaign. She won five matches at No. 4 singles and went a perfect 3-0 at No. 5 singles.

Other returning players include sophomores Taylor Briggs and Natalia Tomaszewicz. Newcomers include Claire-Mitchell Andrews, Tiffany Superstein and Patrycia Tomaszewicz.
