Boca Raton, FL - The Florida Atlantic University women's tennis team will open the spring 2011 season against one of its toughest opponents, the nationally ranked University of Miami, on Friday, January 21 at noon, in Coral Gables.

The Owls hope to continue making strides toward respectability among Florida's NCAA Division 1 programs. Underclass players have gained experience and improved their playing skills during the past two seasons under Head Coach Marcy Hora-Cova. Last year's 9-11 record was a two-win improvement over the previous year.

"The team has been looking forward to season starting," said Hora-Cava. "This is the best time of the year for both my team and myself. We welcome and want the competition."

This year's FAU team boasts three players that won 10 or more singles matches last spring. Topping the list is junior Erika Mrazkova, who had a 12-9 record in 2010. Junior Cassie Bergeson and sophomore Natasha Basma are other top returnees.

FAU will have to wait until Saturday, February 12 at 2 p.m. for its home opener, a match against Florida Gulf Coast University at Patch Reef Park, 2000 Yamato Road, in Boca Raton.
