Alena Dvorakova - through to quarterfinals

Winter Park, FL - Seven members of the Florida Atlantic University tennis teams completed play Friday in the opening rounds of the C.L. Varner Invitational hosted by Rollins College. Senior F.J. Schofield led the way for the Owls on the men's side with two singles victories and a doubles victory while top seed Alena Dvorakova cruised through to the quarterfinals on the women's side.
Schofield won his first two singles matches in straight sets before teaming up with junior Kevin Obletz for an upset 9-8 victory over the top-seeded doubles team of Joel Allen and Simon Jaeger from UCF. The Owls other doubles pairing of Antonello Magris and David Demers fell in the first round.
On the singles side, Obletz won his first-round match but fell to Gaston Verna of Florida Southern in the second round. Demers also lost in the second round but eighth-seeded junior Magris fared better, winning his second round match after receiving a first-round bye.
Sophomore Katherine Bartnik joins Dvorakova in the women's quarterfinals after straight-sets victories in both the second and third rounds. Freshman Pia Terol fell in her first singles match as an Owl, 6-3, 6-2, but then paired with Bartnik to win their first-round doubles match.
Play continues on Saturday with the tournament finals scheduled for Sunday.
