Denton, TX - The Florida Atlantic University women's tennis advanced to the quarterfinals of the Sun Belt Conference Championships with a 4-0 victory over Arkansas State University on Thursday, April 19, in Denton, Texas. The victory, improving the team's record to 10-8, ensures a winning season for the Owls.
FAU, the tournament's No. 9 seed, advances to play the tournament's top seed and host University of North Texas on Friday, April 20, at 12:30 p.m.
"The team came out with a lot of energy at the beginning of the match and got a big victory over a quality Arkansas State team," said Marcy Hora-Cava, FAU's head women's tennis coach. "The seniors (Justine Humair and Erika Mrazkova) helped set the tone early in the match with their energy. The rest of the team fed off that momentum. We are excited to keep playing in the tournament."
The Owls quickly grabbed momentum in the match by winning the doubles point. The tandem of junior Natasha Phillips and freshman Catalina Ene got the first victory with an 8-4 triumph at No. 3 doubles. Then, freshman Natalia Tomaszewicz and junior Marlene Ryan clinched the point with an 8-6 victory at the top of the doubles lineup.
The winning ways continued in singles action, with FAU players taking the first set in four of the six matches. Tomaszewicz scored a commanding 6-0, 6-0 victory at No. 6 singles, freshman Catalina Ene won by identical 6-3, 6-3 scores at No. 4 singles and Mrazkova clinched the victory with a 6-2, 6-4 victory at the No. 5 position.
