Maria Aguirre-Gomez led FAU to a 4-1 win over last year's A-Sun Champs.

April 18, 2003

DELAND, FL - Sophomore Krystel Borg put the wraps on another strong performance by Florida Atlantic University in the Atlantic Sun Conference Tournament. Borg polished off the University of Central Florida's Pamela Fernandez, 6-3, 7-5, as FAU (18-5, 5-0) muscled its way past the no. 3 seed. This victory sets up a rematch between Campbell and FAU in the A-Sun Championship game. Two years ago, head coach Caroline Hora saw her Lady Owls fall, 4-3, to the Camels as an interim head coach.

Borg's singles match was a paradigm of the Lady Owls win. Neither win came as easily as the score might indicate. With FAU up, 3-1, Borg trailed a break, 4-2, in her second set before rallying to win five out of the last six games. Borg's victory was perfect timing, as the two unfinished matches were ready to enter a third set.

The doubles point was equally as tough for FAU. Just as the previous day, the point rested in the hands of Maria Aguirre-Gomez and Jessica Burrow with the two teams splitting the first two doubles matches. Once again, the senior tandem came up big. In a match that featured seven breaks, Aguirre-Gomez and Burrow came out on top, 8-6, giving FAU a 1-0 lead.

No. 72 UCF came back to tie the score, 1-1, by grabbing the point at no. 4. That's when Aguirre-Gomez put the Lady Owls ahead for good. The senior from Murcia Spain pounced all over Anna Westin, 6-1, 6-2, at no. 3.

Not a minute later, Alena Dvorakova, recorded her 20th win of the year, 6-2, 6-0, at no. 1. Dvorakova's win put the Lady Owls up, 3-1, setting the stage for Borg's match clinching victory.

The second seeded Lady Owls will play no. 1 seed Campbell tomorrow, April 19th, at Mandy Stoll Tennis Center. The match is set to begin at 10:00 am.
