The Florida Atlantic University women's tennis team improved its chances of having a winning season after scoring a decisive 7-0 victory over Wright State University on Wednesday afternoon at Patch Reef Park in Boca Raton. The victory put the team's record at 8-9 on the spring and surpasses the seven-win mark from last season.
"One year at a time is the process in building a program," said Women's Tennis Head Coach Marcy Hora-Cava, whose team has two dual matches remaining on the schedule before the Sun Belt Conference Tournament. "The level of play is totally different than last year."
The Owls won all six singles matches in straight sets, highlighted by dominating performances at the bottom portion of the lineup.
Cruising to victories were sophomore Erika Mrazkova, who dropped just one game at No. 4 singles; sophomore Dominique Wimmer, who won at No. 5 singles by a 6-0, 6-1 score; and freshman Natasha Phillips, who picked up the third career victory with a 6-0, 6-1 decision.
Other FAU players contributing to the team win were sophomore Justine Humair, who won in identical 6-3 scores at No. 1 singles; sophomore Cassie Bergeson, victorious 6-2, 6-4 win at No. 2 singles; and freshman Natasha Basma, who scored a 6-2, 6-3 victory at No. 3 singles.
Hora-Cava liked how her team came back after losing a 6-1 match to Columbia University nearly a week ago.
"We worked on keeping the lead when having the advantage in a match," said Hora-Cava. "(Wednesday), we were able to apply pressure throughout the entire match."
The Owls will close out the home season on Thursday, March 25 with a Senior Day match against DePaul University, starting at 2 p.m., at Patch Reef Park. Senior Natalia Totevska will be honored prior to the match.
