Sophomore Dominique Wimmer won a hard-fought three-set decision at No. 6 singles to clinch the 4-3 over Louisiana-Lafayette on Saturday
March 6, 2010
Sophomore Dominique Wimmer battled back from dropping the opening set to win her match and help give the Florida Atlantic University women's tennis team a 4-3 victory over Sun Belt Conference opponent University of Louisiana-Lafayette on Saturday afternoon at Patch Reef Park in Boca Raton.
The win improves FAU to 4-6 on the season and extended the team's winning streak to two matches after the Owls knocked off Duquesne University on Wednesday. Louisiana-Lafayette falls to 2-5 on the spring season.
Florida Atlantic players showed their competitiveness by rallying throughout the match. The team came back from losing the first set to eventually win in three sets while recording three of its four singles victories. Also, the Owls showcased their depth by sweeping the last four singles matches in the lineup.
After losing the first set 6-3, sophomore Cassie Bergeson rallied to win the second set tiebreaker 7-6 and then coasting to a 6-0 victory at No. 3 singles.
Another sophomore, Erika Mrazkova, earned a come-from-behind three-set victory at the No. 4 singles position, losing just four games after dropping the initial set.
The only straight-set victory for the Owls came from freshman Natasha Basma, who scored won a close first set tiebreaker 7-5 before closing out the match with a 6-4 win at No. 5 singles.
That set the stage for Wimmer's heroics at No. 6 singles. With the match tied at 3-3, Wimmer lost a tiebreaker in the opening frame 7-5 but fought back to win the second and third sets by identical 6-4 scores. Wimmer also joined junior Virginia Augustin to win the only doubles match of the day for FAU.
FAU will remain busy throughout the spring break period with its second straight match against a Sun Belt Conference opponent when Middle Tennessee State University comes to Patch Reef Park on Monday, March 8, for a 1 p.m. encounter.
