Palm City, FL - The Florida Atlantic University women's tennis got back in the win column by not dropping a match in a commanding 7-0 victory over the University of South Dakota on Monday, March 4. The match was played on clay courts in Palm City.
FAU, 6-4 for the season, quickly won the doubles point with an 8-1 victory by senior Marlene Ryan and junior Stephanie Cardullo in the No. 2 match. Then, senior Natasha Basma and sophomore Taylor Briggs clinched the point with an 8-3 win on the third court. Senior Natasha Phillips and sophomore Natalia Tomaszewicz also won atop the doubles lineup.
In singles, Basma dropped only two games in the No. 2 match to give FAU a 2-0 advantage. Cardullo dropped only three games in a 6-1, 6-2 victory over South Dakota's Nina Barudzic on the fourth court.
Later, Ryan clinched the match with a 6-2, 6-1 win in the leadoff spot. The winning continued as Phillips improved to 5-0 on the season with a straight-set victory 7-6 (2), 6-2 over Yamini Reddy.
Briggs rounded out the winners, capturing the No. 5 match in three sets. She won the second set, 6-4, before defeating Veronika Makashov in the tiebreaker 10-5 to complete the sweep.
South Dakota now has a 5-4 record for this spring season.
FAU returns to the court on Wednesday, March 6 at 1:30 p.m. when it hosts Michigan State University of the Big Ten Conference from Patch Reef Park.
