The Florida Atlantic University women's tennis team swept all singles matches and two doubles matches to pick up its first victory of the young season, defeating Bethune-Cookman University 7-0 on Friday in Daytona Beach, Fla.
"The girls fought hard and were focused to get a victory today," said Women's Tennis Head Coach Marcy Hora-Cava.
FAU grabbed the early lead by taking two of the three doubles matches - earning the single possible point in doubles competition. The sophomore team of Justine Humair and Cassie Bergeson won 8-1 at the No. 1 position, while senior Natalia Totevska teamed with sophomore Dominique Wimmer to win 8-5 in the important No. 3 match.
The Owls continued the strong play in singles as all six players recorded straight-set victories.
Humair picked up her first dual victory of the season by winning 6-3, 6-3 at No. 1 singles. Totevska dropped just three games in earning a victory at No. 2 two singles by 6-2, 6-1 scores.
At No. 3 singles, Wimmer won the last 12 games of the match to win 6-4, 6-0 while Bergeson and sophomore Erika Mrazkova picked up wins in the middle of the Owls' lineup. Junior Virginia Augustin rounded out the singles lineup by dropping just four games and improving her record to 3-1 on the season.
"I was proud of the girls' effort today as Dominique Wimmer battled back from a 4-0 deficit in the first set," said Hora-Cava.
The Owls will have a quick turnaround as the team is schedules to play two dual matches on Saturday in Orlando: against the University of Central Florida, starting at 9 a.m., and Michigan State University, starting at 3 p.m.
