DELAND, Fla. – The Florida Atlantic University women’s tennis team started its spring slate with a 4-3 win at Stetson on Friday. The Owls took an early advantage, but it took freshman Naiya Oden’s singles win to take down the Hatters.
“We came out very quickly in the doubles to clinch the first point,” FAU Head Coach Marcy Hora-Cava said. “In singles, Ana [Gutierrez] and freshman Laura [Fabrizi] won their matches confidently. The whole match came down to Naiya who was in her third set. She calmly defeated her opponent who put up a good fight. I'm proud of all the players but especially the freshmen who played their first match and didn't show any nerves or hesitations.”
• Fabrizi and Gutierrez paired up to win their doubles match 6-2
• Fabrizi then dominated 6-3, 6-1 in her singles match while Gutierrez won her match 6-2, 6-1
• Oden and Kaitlyn Walker battled for a 6-4 doubles win to earn the point for the Owls
• With the match tied at 3-3, Oden came back in the third set to take a 6-4, 3-6, 6-2 win to cement the match in favor of FAU.
FAU returns home to host San Jose State on Sunday, Jan. 22 at 10 a.m. at the FAU Tennis Complex and will also host Bethune Cookman on Feb. 5 and Florida A&M on Feb. 11.
