BOCA RATON, Fla. – Florida Atlantic University’s women’s tennis team started the spring schedule Saturday at the Florida Gulf Coast University Invitational tournament in Ft. Myers, FL. The tournament was held Jan. 18-21, on the campus of Florida Gulf Coast and featured competitors from five schools.
Florida Atlantic won eight matches the first day, and had two players advance from the quarterfinals in their singles bracket and two teams advance from the quarterfinals in doubles bracket.
FAU junior Taylor Briggs and freshman Kandis Legall won their doubles match against Arkansas State’s Sofia Krsmanovic and Chiara Stefanov 7-5. FAU freshman Bianca Biglione and senior Stephanie Cardullo won their match against Northwestern State University of Louisiana’s Petya Simeonova and Daniela Simonova 6-2.
In singles, FAU junior Taylor Briggs defeated Arkansas State’s Chiara Stefanov 7-5, 6-4 to advance to the semifinals. FAU freshman Bianca Biglione the only FAU player to win both her doubles and singles quarterfinals matches downed Caroline Anderson of Iowa State 6-3 and 6-2.
The second day of competition saw two Owls face off against each other and FAU won a total of three matches. FAU freshman Bianca Biglione played teammate junior Taylor Briggs and won 6-4, 6-1. FAU freshman Kandis Legall won her back draw match against Northwestern State University of Louisiana’s Tatiana Larina 5-7, 6-3, 1-0 (10-6). The duo of FAU freshman Lyndsey Boos and junior Catalina Ene defeated host FCGU’s Bettina Botha and Johanna Sterkel 7-5.
The third day of play at the FGCU Invitational saw the final undefeated Owl go down in the Flight C singles final. FAU freshman Bianca Biglione was defeated 6-4, 6-2 by FCGU’s Candela Munoz Giron. The Owls were able to win five matches on the final day of the invitational. FAU’s Kandis Legall won her second back draw match against Northwestern State University of Louisiana’s Natalya Krutova 6-2, 3-6, 1-0 (11-9). FAU’s Claire-Mitchell Andrews won her back draw match against Florida Gulf Coast’s Gyanna Mandic 6-4, 2-6, 1-0 (10-4). FAU senior Stephanie Cardullo defeated Iowa State’s Emma Waites 6-3, 7-5. FAU junior Taylor Briggs defeated Petya Simeonova 6-1, 6-2. The team of freshman Bianca Biglione and senior Stephanie Cardullo defeated their FAU teammates Taylor Briggs and Kandis Legall 6-2 in the back draw of Flight B doubles.
FAU’s next match is at home against Louisiana Tech Jan. 25 at 10 a.m. at Patch Reef Park.
