BOCA RATON, Fla. (January 18, 2014) - Florida Atlantic University's women's tennis team started the spring schedule Saturday at the Florida Gulf Coast University Invitational tournament in Ft. Myers, FL. The tournament is taking place Jan. 18-21, on the campus of Florida Gulf Coast and features competitors from five schools.
Florida Atlantic won eight matches on the day, and have two players advancing from the quarterfinals in their brackets in singles and two teams advancing from the quarterfinals in doubles.
"Being here watching by freshman compete and seeing how some of my other ladies have matured on the court is really rewarding," said FAU Women's Tennis Coach Marcy Cava.
"We lost some tough matches, but each one of my players learned something from their loss and it will only make them stronger players. Overall, we won a lot of matches and competed hard."
FAU junior Taylor Briggs and freshman Kandis Legall won their doubles match against Arkansas State's Sofia Krsmanovic and Chiara Stefanov 7-5. FAU freshman Bianca Biglione and senior Stephanie Cardullo won in their match against Northwestern State University of Louisiana's Petya Simeonova and Daniela Simonova 6-2.
In singles, FAU junior Taylor Briggs defeated Arkansas State's Chiara Stefanov 7-5 and 6-4 to advance to the semifinals. FAU freshman Bianca Biglione the only FAU player to win both her doubles and singles quarterfinals matches beat Caroline Anderson of Iowa State 6-3 and 6-2.
The FGCU tournament continues with both singles and doubles matches to determine players for Monday's final rounds.
