Boca Raton, Fla. - The Florida Atlantic University men's and women's swimming and diving teams will kick off the season against Florida's top collegiate competition in the first All Florida Invitational, beginning on Friday, October 1 and continuing through Sunday, October 3 in Gainesville. The meet showcases the state's best collegiate talent and will provide an early barometer of where the teams early in the season.
The men's team is building off its best finish in Sun Belt Conference (SBC) action with last year's fourth-place finish in the championship meet. Junior Csaba Pek was the league's "Swimmer of the Week" three times one year ago, and had three top-10 finishes in the SBC meet. Fellow junior Mikolaj Czarnecki broke his own school record and won a conference title in the 200-yard butterfly. Sophomore Eric Williams has been impressive during preseason practice, beating Czarnecki in his specialty event during the team's fall inter squad scrimmage.
Meanwhile, the women's team returns several key performers from last year's squad that placed fourth in the SBC championships. Leading the pack is sophomore Eszter Bucz, a two-event league winner who broke school records in the 200- and 400-yard individual medley events, and established a freshman school record in the 1,000-yard freestyle event. Junior Jonna Nyback had two runner-up finishes in the 100- and 200-yard freestyle events at the league championships and was named the conference's "Swimmer of the Week" once. Junior Erin Hersey emerged as one of the top scorers on last year's team and placed 10th in the 200-yard butterfly event at last year's league meet.
