Women are victorious on the road against IRSC

FORT PIERCE, FL - The women's swimming and diving team, fueled by 11 first-place finishes, easily won on the road Saturday against Indian River State College.

Paced by Eszter Bucz and Anett Kovacs with four victories apiece, the team won by the final score of 180-113.

Bucz was part of the opening 400-yard medley relay team, along with Iwona Lefanowicz, Erin Hersey and Jonna Nyback. They combined to finish with a winning time of 3:55.47. Bucz also went on to win the 100-yard breaststroke (1:05.11), the 200-yard breaststroke (2:22.41, a more than seven-second win) and the 200-yard individual medley (2:08.03).

Kovacs too was part of a winning relay squad, in the 800-yard freestyle. She teamed with Frida Nilsson, Nyback and Stephanie Barker to finish in a time of 7:45.69, nearly nine seconds ahead of the second-place finishers. The freshman also won individual races in the 200-yard freestyle (1:53.01), the 200-yard butterfly (2:03.33) and the 100-yard butterfly (57.87).

A second freshman, Lefanowicz, besides being part of the 400-yard medley winners, also had two individual victories, in the 100-yard backstroke (58.70) and 200-yard backstroke (2:05.97). She finished second behind her teammate Bucz in the 200-yard IM as well, in a time of 2:13.17.

Yet another first-year swimmer, Nilsson, was part of the aforementioned 800-yard freestyle winners, and also finished first in the 50-yard freestyle (25.00). Additionally, she had two runner-up finishes on the day, in the 100-yard freestyle (53.24) and in the 100-yard butterfly (59.14).

Placing in four separate races was sophomore Alexandra Gonzalez. She was runner-up behind Lefanowicz in the 200-yard backstroke (2:14.10), and was third in the 100-yard backstroke (1:02.37), the 200-yard IM (2:14.49), and as part of the 400-yard relay (4:08.31, with Kristen LeGro, Barker and Elizabeth Starke).


 

 

For the divers, Courtney Hansen was first on 1-meter (245.09) and second on the 3-meter (197.10).

The team will have one more tune-up before the Sun Belt Conference Championships. This Saturday, February 4, is a Senior Day tri-meet, against Daytona State College and FIU.
