Beach Volleyball Drops a Pair of Close Decisions at FIU Surf and Turf Invitational

Final Stats

MIAMI, Fla. The no. 14 Florida Atlantic University beach volleyball team had a tough day at the FIU Surf and Turf Tournament on Saturday. FAU lost to no. 12 Arizona State and no. 15 FIU by matching 3-2 scores. The Owls are now 18-5 on the year.

Match 1 vs. #12 Arizona State

Four of the five courts required a third set. Ashlan Cunningham and Jazmine Barker gave FAU an early 1-0 lead with a 21-13, 21-14 win on court 5. Brittany Pellitteri and Julia Lewkowicz overcame a first set loss to force a third frame at no. 4, but came up just short of completing the rally, 16-14. Nicole Navarro and Nicole Grant regained the lead with a three-set win. The tandem of Candace Lacour and Gabby Dischler won the first set, but fell victim to a Sun Devil rally on the no. 2 court. The Owls’ top team of Megan Rice and Jessalyn Kinlaw won the first set 26-24, but couldn’t hang on, dropping set three 15-8.

Match 2 vs. #15 FIU

Barker and Cunningham lost in straight sets at no. 5, however, Lacour and Dischler won in straight sets at no. 2 to tie the match 1-1. Pellitteri and Lewkowicz came up just at short on court four, allowing the Panthers to take a 2-1 edge. Navarro and Grant swept FIU’s no. 3 tandem, making the meeting of no. 1 teams the decisive point. Rice and Kinlaw lost the first set, then rallied to take the second. In the decisive frame, FIU held on for a 15-11 win.
