Sand Volleyball Defeats Florida Gulf Coast at FIU Pairs Tournament

Miami, Fla. - In a rematch from seven days earlier, the Florida Atlantic University sand volleyball team defeated Florida Gulf Coast 3-2 at the FIU Pairs Tournament.

Kristi Tekavec and Lexi Rhein started the Owls off with a win at no. 5. Megan Knapp and Mandy McIntosh defeated Shelby Joslin and Elenona Kazarian at no. 4. In the match at no. 3 Andrea Galinis and Gabriella Pyle clinched the match with a three-set win over the Eagles' duo of Olivia Mesner and Caroline Jordan. FAU had a chance to complete the sweep, with Darija Sataric and Natalie Fraley (no. 1) and Lauren D'Amato and Beth Shoaff (no. 2) both forcing third sets, but neither team was able to gain the victory.

FAU fell to rival FIU 5-0 in the Owls' first match of the day. Tekavec and Rhein won the first set at no. 5, but were unable to hold off a Panther rally to take the point. In its second match of the day, FAU lost to Webber International 3-2. Tekavec and Rhein won in straight sets at no. 5, and Knapp and McIntosh staved off a comeback attempt at no. 4 to give the Owls a 2-0 lead.

The matches at no. 2 and no. 3 both went to decisive third sets, but neither FAU duo was able to pull off the match clinching win.

 

 

The Owls will host Stetson in a doubleheader on Wednesday, April 2, beginning at 10 a.m. in Deerfield Beach, Fla.
