Sanger and Messer Named FAU's Student-Athletes of the Week

BOCA RATON, FL- Florida Atlantic University’s Brendon Sanger of baseball and Samantha Messer of softball have been honored for their recent accomplishments by being named this week's Student-Athletes of the Week.

Sanger hit home runs in back-to-back at-bats this weekend to lead the Owls to a Conference USA series win at FIU. The sophomore’s three-run homer on Saturday capped off a nine-run eighth inning in which ten consecutive Owls reached base with two outs. He then belted a two-run shot in the first inning on Sunday, giving FAU a lead it would not relinquish. Sanger drove in six runs and scored three times on the weekend.

The Owls will host the Miami Hurricanes on Wednesday, April 23 at 6:30 p.m. Live stats and audio will be available at fausports.com.

Against UTEP on Friday, Messer threw 7.0 shutout innings, struck out five and allowed just two hits in a 2-0 win over the Miners. On Saturday, Messer entered the game against UTEP with the game tied at 3. She threw 5.0 shutout innings, allowing just two hits and helping the Owls to a 4-3, 11 inning win. For the week, she threw 12.0 innings, had six strikeouts, allowed just four hits and no runs.  

FAU softball will travel to Murfreesboro, TN to face Middle Tennessee State in a three-game series starting on Saturday, May 3 at 2:00 p.m.
